"Inspiration" is one of the ways we describe sacred scripture. The sacred authors were "inspired" by the Holy Spirit to write down what they did so that what comes down to us can be counted as part of Divine Revelation.
"Revelation" is another elementary concept. Along with inspiration these are words which form part of the vocabulary of the Church. The faithful should be familiar with them and use them correctly. They should also be aware when they are used inaccurately, mistakenly, or misleadingly. Such can be the case when someone personally claims that they felt God inspiring to do or say something. Knowing, here, the difference between inspiration as a part of revelation and someone's personal, private experience of God acting in their lives can be quite helpful. The former is necessary for salvation—we need to word of God to get to heaven. The latter, Bob or Susie's personal inspiration, however powerful and effective is no universal standard by which to guide the faithful. There's more to it than just this and I don't mean to give short shrift to the movement of actual grace in anyone's life. The larger point here is, know the vocabulary of the Church and use it correctly.
