Catholic Funeral Rites
St. Joseph’s, Catholic Church, Morganza, Maryland

The Funeral Rites begin at the Home, proceed to the Church and end at the Cemetery. Each place is important, with its own spiritual purpose.

1: The Home: Viewing, Wake, Visitation, Prayers

• Family & friends first gather at The Home, most often a Funeral Home, usually the day or evening before, or sometimes the morning of the Mass before going in procession to the Church. The Home, with its easier surroundings, is a more comforting place for the family to receive friends & loved ones who visit to pay their respects, to view the deceased, and to offer condolences & prayers. The Church is not available for viewings & visitations prior to Mass.

2: The Church: Mass of Christian Burial

• The procession next gathers at the Church for a special Mass. This is typically on the morning of the day of the Burial. The Body of the Deceased is brought into the Church and Mass is offered for the repose of the soul of the faithful departed before heading to the cemetary for the burial.

3: The Cemetery: Commital, Burial

• The Rites conclude when the procession finally arrives at the Cemetery. There, the Body of the departed is committed to the earth with prayers, to await the Resurrection of the Body on the Last Day.

1. Eulogies, obituary and poetry readings, and all other appropriate remembrances are best shared at the gathering at the Home. 
2. Scripture selections, Music and other details for the Mass are coordinated directly in consultation with the Pastor through the Rectory Office.
3. Arranging for the burial of cremated remains is also coordinated through the Rectory in consultation with the Cemetery. Please refer any questions regarding particular circumstances to the Rectory Office.
4. The Mass of Christian Burial is typically scheduled at St. Joseph’s at 10:00 AM on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Fridays. Please note, previous commitments in the Parish typically prevent Saturday Funerals.
