Musical Interlude:
In 1941 Harry Warren wrote the music and Mack Gordon wrote the lyrics for “At Last.” Before today I’ve only known Etta James 1960 version of it. She’s got a great voice. Fox Sports signed off their broadcast of the Red Sox World Series win with it in 2004.
But then I discovered The Glenn Miller Orchestra go with it. I hadn't heard Miller's version before today. I’ve been a Glenn Miller fan for as long as I can remember. His version is wonderful. And, Oh, how I love a fox trot!
The lyric that conveys the sentiment of the whole song is its opening line:
“At last! My love has come along…”
Can I get biblical for a moment? This is also the sentiment of the very first words that man speaks in the whole Bible at the conclusion of his search for a partner. On seeing the woman we hear him speak for the first time and say, “This one, at last…” Meanwhile, the very last words of the whole Bible anticipate this very same sentiment, this time in a brief dialogue between the Bride and the Lord Jesus. The Bride says, “Come”…and Jesus replies, “Surely I am coming soon.”
In other words, the deepest longings of man as created and redeemed by God are put to music, here.
Enjoy.
